Give Her a Start

Build Her Future. Strengthen America.

Every woman who becomes a senior congressional staffer had to get her first opportunity somehow. For many young women an unpaid or low-paid internship can be a barrier to entering public service, particularly for students who don't have the resources to support themselves in Washington. WCSF helps remove that barrier. Our summer scholarships give young women the opportunity to get their start on Capitol Hill. From there, they gain experience, build relationships, develop leadership skills and begin building careers in public service. When we give a woman her start, we're investing in the future of Congress.

She just needed an opportunity

Martha grew up in a town of just 600 people in northern Idaho. As a first-generation college student studying political science and economics, she wanted to build a career in public policy.

But getting to Capitol Hill meant covering flights, rent, and food in Washington, DC, on her own, without a financial safety net.

A WCSF scholarship helped ease that burden. Instead of worrying about taking on a second job, Martha could focus on her internship, build professional relationships, attend events, and make the most of her time in DC.

Today, Martha is the Director of Corporate Affairs and Client Engagement at Viohl and Associates, working with clients on state government policy. She plans to pursue law school in the coming years.

Reflecting on her journey, Martha shared:

“I would not be where I am without my internships and, importantly, the Women's Congressional Staff Foundation.”

Give another young woman that same opportunity

Every leader has to get her start somewhere.

For many young women, an internship on Capitol Hill is the first step toward a career in public service.

But getting that start isn't equally accessible to everyone.

Unpaid or low-paid internships can make it difficult, or impossible, for students without financial resources to afford a summer in Washington, D.C.

WCSF helps remove that barrier.

Through our summer internship scholarships, we give young women the opportunity to get their start on Capitol Hill. From there, they gain experience, build relationships, develop leadership skills and begin building careers in public service.

When we give a woman her start, we're investing in the future of America.
